i mean to be fair he's a villain who started in 1964 a lot of old school bad guys don't really take to the modern era that well without redesigns, etc, esp with regards to live action adaptations, which is why the whole purple bit is mostly gone in the show aside from some clever usage. not to mention, like i said before, quality standards between audiences are radically different with the mediums, which is why a lot of cape comics are especially silly despite being regarded as classics. the show incarnation is probably one of the better killgrave adaptations for a variety of reasons. he's a villain where the idea of his power is more interesting than how he's often used. kind of like spot in spiderman. i mean look at this dude

it's best not to think too hard about appearances. there's a reason luke cage looks like this in the tv show and modern comics:

    and not this

although the show did a funny gag with his og costume

i know a lot of people use terms like this to describe things, but a lot of superhero comics books are especially "shut off your brain" kind of stuff. if you think too hard about various things, they become stupid very quickly.

your problems with that particular implementation of killgrave should be less in that he's purple and more that he's written in the most comedically "evil" way they can with an R rating to go off of. a lot of marvel's MAX line is very lmao in retrospect outside of maybe the punisher, and even that's edge incarnate. it's like once the restrictions were off, a lot of writers were as crass and violent as possible because they could be rather than in proper usage. it's the same problem i have with "adult" cartoons, in that most people use that as an excuse to say bad words instead of, let's say, make something cool ala aeon flux

I feel like I should post a scene from the show to contrast with the comic book version. This is basically his introduction. It's far from his best scene, but those are all from later into the show.

You can see that he kind of retains his short temper from the comic segment Saldite posted, but it's far less cartoony. I think the show does go in very interesting places with him later on, though.
They are not subtle about addressing the fact that his mind control is abuse and his characterization takes a lot of things from the behavior of actual abusers. A lot of what he does is about the power dynamic and the creepiest scenes are when you could simply remove the element of his mind control and story wouldn't really change at all. It's uncomfortable but it makes for very engaging television, especially when you add in how charming David Tennant (the actor playing him) is. Plus they handle the fact that Jessica has PTSD from her time under his control pretty well. She's a VERY good main character in the show.

Is the chapter on IRC before or after forums? Are you telling stories chronologically?

Yuki, sometimes I think about these things.

Where is the limit of the world?

The very edge of the edge of the world.

    If such a place existed...

Suppose I was able to stand in that place. Could I look at the scenery from that edge, just like anywhere else?

If I think it's normal to wonder about these things... Does that make me weird?

I mean, that's the edge of the world.

It's the limit of the world.

If I could see that with my own two eyes, wouldn't the limit of the world become the same as my own limit?

Wouldn't the world, viewed from that spot... be the world that I see? Wouldn't that be my world?

The limit of the world would become the limit of my world.

The world is that which I see, touch, and feel.

    Then what is the world?

What is the difference between me and the world?

    Is there a difference?

The difference between me and the world.

This is what I have to say.

There is no difference between me and the world.

    Of that I am certain.

That conviction leads me to another question.

What is a world that also includes other people?

If I am the world, then what about the other people?

    Do they have worlds too?

Then are they separate worlds that don't intersect?

Or is it possible for them to intersect?

Out of all the worlds and all the souls... Is it only possible for each soul to see one single world?

The scene I saw at the end of the world.

    The limit of the world.

    The furthest scene.

At that time, were you looking at the edge of the world too?

The sky you saw at the edge of the world.

The sky at the limit of the world.

    The furthest sky.

Will I be able to see it with you?

Will I be able to see the end of the same world with you?

Even as we stand under different skies, we look out from under the same sky.

Sometimes I think about these things.

Even as I think back upon...

    That hill covered in sunflowers.

Shit, I talk about having been active (lol) on a forum now and people look at me like I'm speaking in tongues.

That being said, I'm totally telling wild west stories about taming the web

I heard the sound of my skull cracking.

But that wasn’t from the outside world.

I think it came from within me.

Minakami-san, sometimes I think about these things.

    They’re the same.

However, other people might have felt this too.

Even you might think that the world is you.

And I think that’s probably correct.

I couldn’t say for sure, but if you stood at the edge of the world, you would probably see the shape of the world just like I do.

So you would be the same as the world too.

But that really doesn’t make sense.

If the world is me, why can’t I see the world that you see?

Even though you are in my world, I can’t see the world you see.

I’ve never seen the world that you do.

They’re like parallel universes that can never cross.

Even if there are hints that suggest the other exists, they can never touch.

I can’t see the world you live in.

    But...

    Is that really the case?

Have I really never seen your world?

If every person has been equally allotted one singular world...

How could those worlds possibly become one?

How can there be so many worlds?

There must be a way for the worlds to become one.

Sometimes, I think about these things.

    That’s why...
I was able to love you.

rereading the alias comic to see if it's as bad/good as i think/remember and it's really not bad. the early chunks of the story have more of an appeal on the more human elements of the superheroes in universe rather than the show which was more just general jessica. it's neat to see these people in their day jobs and shit since for the most part jessica is almost entirely a civilian at this point despite "being in the community", she's pretty much outside of it and would only really know them via their day lives as civilians or vaguely as acquaintances.

i will say it does require a bit more general comic knowledge as a result and may not be as entirely as welcoming as the show is to people who don't follow capes. like at this point the big ones are all obvious (in the comic, her friend is actual captain marvel vs childhood adoptive sister but carol has a movie by now so people know who she is anyway even if they don't outright say "captain marvel", same with captain america showing up as steve rogers), but i could see somebody not knowing who the fuck clay quartermain is (i even had to google him like who the fuck is this dude oh that guy).

i also forgot but like some of the more annoying aspects she has to deal with as being in the community since one of the things the comic kind of goes over is the idea of how general people just assume metahumans are all like related and friends and shit, and how it's weird when they aren't or something.

idk. like mundane human ideas for cape stories. like where does the thing shop for clothes or stupid shit. it's fun to me.

I really like the vibe/charm of 90s and 2000s media. idk how to describe it

I might check this out because the themes seem personally relevant to me
